Making a Difference
Organisation: Immanuel College Secondary School (Bushey, Hertfordshire)
‘Making a Difference' was the title of a 6 week cross-curricular programme of study about the life experiences of unaccompanied asylum seekers in the UK - developed by JCORE (Jewish Council for Racial Equality) in 2004. A series of activities were run during assemblies, form time and lesson time (including geography, RE and history). During the unit pupils at Immanuel College were encouraged to look at their own identities and explore how the situation of unaccompanied asylum seekers affected them and their responsibility towards refugees. They also undertook research about how asylum seekers & refugees contribute to a diverse society. The unit of work culminated with a whole school assembly facilitated by 6th Form students and teachers and involving invited speakers such as the author Beverley Naidoo and Deng Yai of the Refugee Council.
