Background:
‘Moving Here' is a travelling exhibition which aims to simulate the refugee experience for pupils. It involves pupils being given a set of headphones and listening to a soundtrack of atmospheric voices and music as they move through a series of eight small rooms which recreate the asylum seekers' journeys to Britain. It is available for schools in South Yorkshire to book through the Sheffield Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS). It is designed to be used after pupils have experienced the earlier activities in the teaching resource 'Moving Here The Refugee Experience - A Teaching Activity Book for Citizenship, PSHE and English at KS2-4' available from EMAS.
Suitable for:
Key Stages 2 - 4 (Not recommended for pupils below Year 6)
Time needed:
Initial discussion: 5-10 minutes; Exhibition visit: 15 minutes per pupil (pupils should be sent into the exhibition two minutes apart); Looking at displays/watching video (17 minutes) takes place concurrently with the exhibition. (Total time needed for a class of 30, estimated at around 1 hour and 10 minutes.)
You will need:
To book the exhibition for your school well in advance, or arrange to visit it at another school or other venue near to you. You might wish to make a joint booking with a local pyramid or cluster of schools. (Typically the exhibition might be assembled in approximately 4 hours and remain in one site for ten days or so.) The exhibition is 7.32 metres (24 ft.) long, 6.1 metres (20 ft) wide and about 2.4 metres (8 ft.) high. The component parts are small enough to get through most double doors, the largest width being 2.4 metres (8 ft.).
