This website offers an introduction to Team Great Britain (Team GB) by the British Olympic Association. While the website is currently focused on the Beijing 2008 games, it gives an opportunity to become familiar with the different athletes, each of the sporting events, and all that makes up the Olympics as a whole. The website consists of various components including general games information, athlete information (including biographies, photos, and videos), statistical facts, and an important links section.
The links section is most helpful in discovering the Paralympics and Special Olympics sites, which is integral in broadening the views of strength and achievement. The site is a good beginning to learning more about all that is the Olympics and preparing for London 2012.
The site is beneficial to the Who Do We Think We Are? project because it explores the themes of diversity and ‘Britishness' on many levels. Firstly, the site coveys a sense of national identity, belonging and ‘Britishness' through a focus on Team GB. Furthermore, diversity issues are also explored through the content of athletes' biographies and in the information about the Special Olympics and the Paralympics. Through this website children and young people have an opportunity to learn about many aspects of diversity - including disability issues within the context of physical education and sporting achievement in Britain.
