The Citizen Resource is largely for KS3 History and Citizenship teachers to support the effective study and exploration of the history and legacies of transatlantic enslavement. The resource effectively uses museum collections and archival material to support learning. It was produced in conjunction with the Citizen Website and follows the same themes: Activism, Heritage, Identity and Routes.
This resource pack provides teachers with lesson plans and accompanying classroom activities, 37 colour image cards of the related artefacts, archival materials and artists' works, and 8 posters of significant people linked to the history of the slave trade and its abolition - with additional questions and activities. The pack is divided into four themes: activism, heritage, identity, and routes. These themes address questions of human rights, the history of slavery, stereotyping and cultural identity.
In the Activism section, students examine the anti-slavery movement and the tactics used to bring about the abolition of slavery. They are given the opportunity to look at this activism in a modern context and address issues of modern slavery and possible activism.
The Heritage section provides resources for lessons on the transatlantic slave trade's importance and effects in British history and an activity that has students plan a local slavery memorial.
In the Identity section, students are faced with how the legacies of slavery have impacted the lives of people of African descent. Included are additional resources to help with the teaching of identity.
The Routes section is focused on the continuation of cultural traditions throughout history, with activities for students to think about their own cultural backgrounds.
