WHAT IS ‘WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE?'

Quiet
Loud

Have you ever asked yourself questions like:

  • What makes me who I am?
  • What is my identity? What makes me, unique?

Have other people ever asked you:

  • What is it like being you?
  • Where were you born?
  • Where did you grow up?
  • Why do you like/dislike living in your area?
  • What is your nationality? Do you feel proud of your nationality?

If so, what sort of answers did you give?

Young people's hand prints

All these questions are about IDENTITY. If you've never thought about your identity in this way before, have a think about it now...

Young people all around the country are exploring questions like these about identity, diversity and citizenship during their classroom lessons at school, and also in their local areas as part of a new education project called ‘Who do we think we are?' (WDWTWA). From April 2008 you will be able to use this section of the website to find out what young people from other areas of the country think about this project and then start sharing your own views.

This section of the site will be ‘live' from the end of April 2008. After this date you will be able to:

  • Send and receive podcasts of audio or video material about citizenship.
  • Play educational games to help you learn more about identity, diversity and citizenship.
  • Submit a WDWTWA ‘Profile' about a group, team or community that you belong to.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN WDWTWA WEEK

Why don't you join in and take part during Who do we think we are? Week? The week starts on Monday 23rd June 2008.

To get ready, start talking to other people in your school and at home (friends, family members, teachers and other school staff) and use this website to tell us what you think about "identity", "diversity" and "citizenship".

You can:

  • Use the blog on this site comment about what "Britishness" means to you.
  • Get together with a group of other young people to write a poem or some song lyrics about the village, town or city where you live and upload a podcast.
  • Send us a picture, story board, cartoon strip, or other artwork that you have designed to illustrate the good and bad things about what it is like to live in the UK?

Talk to your school teachers and see if you can prepare and send a newspaper front page article, film or audio clip about the identity of your school community.

  • What is it like to be a member of your school community?
  • What makes your school unique?
  • What are the top 10 things that make you feel proud to be a member of your school community that you would like other young people to know about your school?
  • How do you (and other young people) get involved in helping to make your school environment a nice place to study and play?

Get ready! The countdown to WDWTWA Week starts NOW!
